Do you see black spots like flies in your field of vision when you look at the sky, the white background or while reading a book outdoors? These complaints, which many people do not care about, can be the harbinger of serious eye diseases such as retinal tears or uveitis.
Like your skin, your eye structure may wear out
The largest area in the eye is thraught with a transparent substance with the consistency of jelly, similar to connective tissue, consisting of transparent fibers called “vitreous”. With the advancing age, there are changes in vitreous tissue, such as wrinkles seen on the skin. This structure is normally light translucent, ie transparent. As a result of the changes here, the normal structure of the vitreous gel is disrupted and filaments in the form of a spider web occur. When light enters the eye, the shadow of this structure falls off the retina, which provides vision, causing black spots and mesh. Since this structure accompanies eye movement, floating objects also move. Especially in clear sunny weather, when looking at the sky or light-colored floors, it causes images such as flying flies, black gray spots, hair feathers or spider web in the field of vision.
Your retina may be torn
Although eye floaters (flying flies) in the eye usually occur with age, it can also be seen in people with high myopia, after eye surgery and trauma. In addition, diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure that concern the whole body health can cause intraocular bleeding and cause flies to be seen. These complaints should not be neglected as they may also be signs of important eye diseases such as retinal tears and uveitis.
Do not neglect eye control before pregnancy
If retinal tears and holes are not intervened, the inner retinal layer can be completely separated from the outer layers to which it is attached. This condition, defined as retinal detachment, can lead to partial or general vision loss. High blood pressure during pregnancy and strain during delivery also increase the risk of retinal detachment. Especially for mothers who are highly myopic, having their pre-pregnancy eye checks can prevent possible negative situations.
Do not be late in treatment
It is important to check the retina by the specialist doctor in order to determine the cause of the complaints defined in the eye, such as flying flies, flashing of light and dry rain. Possible vision loss can be prevented by immediately detecting and laser-closing the tears or holes in the retina. It is recommended that patients who do not have problems with retinal examination but complain of flying flies should not interfere with regular eye examination and follow-up.
