Whey is an often underestimated milk product. You can find out about the advantages of whey and how to prepare it tasty here.
Whey: What is behind it?
- Whey is a by-product of milk processing, just like buttermilk. More precisely, whey is a by-product of cheese production because it is separated from the cheese mass as a liquid.
- A distinction is made between sweet whey and sour whey. Sweet whey is produced when rennet, an enzyme from the calf’s stomach, is added to the milk during the production of hard cheese. The greenish liquid that is produced is called sweet whey.
- In soft cheese, on the other hand, lactic acid bacteria are used, which provide acid whey as a by-product. Sweet whey and sour whey are equal in terms of vitamins, minerals (micronutrients) and calories. Due to their short shelf life, fresh whey is rarely available at the supermarket, but rather dry solutions and concentrates.

Whey: Good for losing weight?
- Because of its good nutritional values, whey is naturally a great component of a diet for losing weight. The drink also aids digestion and drains the body.
- But don’t make the mistake of relying on an extreme whey diet. Whey contains many nutrients, but not enough to nourish you completely. Such a diet would be too one-sided and doomed to failure in the long run anyway. However, if you replace a meal with a whey drink, you can easily follow the diet and create new stimuli for your body.
- Whey is nowadays mainly sold in the form of powder, as it is a popular food supplement for muscle building in the fitness scene as a so-called whey protein (whey). The protein can be absorbed and digested very well by the body.
