It is not so easy to find the right shade for foundation, concealer etc. With this trick you can easily determine your skin tone. We’ll also explain how to apply it correctly.
Porcelain, camel or sand: Which tone suits me best?
The make-up shelves are filled to bursting with the most diverse shades of colour from a wide range of brands. It’s easy to get lost in thought and ask yourself again: Which shade really matches the skin tone? The solution is quite easy: A simple trick reveals it – just look at your wrists!
Cool skin undertone
Hold your wrist in the sunlight, when the veins shimmer bluish-violet through and the skin has a rose-bluish tinge, you have a cool skin undertone. By the way, four out of five women in this country have this undertone. A further indicator is the skin’s tolerance to the sun. If the skin burns very quickly and there is little or no tanning, the melanin level is low and you can assume that it is a pinkish, bluish-red undertone.
This is usually the case with light to medium brown hair, light green, hazel, grey or blue eyes, natural blonde or red hair, a pale complexion and freckles.
These foundation tones go with cool skin undertones: Foundations with bluish or pink undertones go with cool skin types. Some make-up manufacturers also choose their product names according to this (for example “cool beige”, “natural rose” or “rose beige”).
Warm skin undertone
If the veins that shimmer through at the wrist look rather greenish, you have a warm skin undertone. In general, the skin has a rather yellowish complexion, tans quickly and does not get sunburned as quickly.
This usually applies to golden brown, dark brown or black hair and brown or green eyes.
These foundation tones match the warm skin undertone: Foundations with yellowish undertones match warm skin types. Make-up shades are then called “golden sand”, “honey” or “amber”, for example.
Neutral skin undertone
The veins shimmer blue-green through the skin, the happy neutral skin type can wear both colour worlds. Depending on which side this mixed type tends towards, its foundation must be adjusted.
When choosing make-up colours, it is best to pay attention to hair and eye colour.
Still unsure?
The following trick also helps to determine the skin undertone: Wrap a white T-shirt around your hair and neck. The white will reflect the colour of your skin. If it is bluish, your skin undertone is cool. However, if your skin looks more yellowish, you are probably a warm skin type.
A general tip for buying a foundation
By the way, when trying out a foundation you should not use your wrists or the surface of your hands, because the skin on your face is usually redder. The wrist is great for determining the skin undertone, but a make-up nuance should actually be tried on the face. Make-up queen Bobbi Brown recommends: “Apply three tones with a little distance between them, go to daylight if possible, and see which one blends best with the skin – that’s the one. In general, you’d better go for more yellowish tones, because pink tinted foundations tend to look more like masks.”
The Foundation: How to apply it properly
- Before applying the foundation, cleanse the face and cream it well with a moisturizer.
- Dark circles under the eyes and small impurities should first be covered with a concealer and worked in well so that there are no edges.
- Work in the foundation with a foundation brush or your fingers and massage in circular movements. Distribute the texture evenly over the face and blend into the neck.
- For fixation: Matt the face with transparent powder. Done!
