Does hair really grow faster if you cut it regularly, and what’s the point of brushing hair frequently to make it shiny? 10 myths in check.
Myth 1: Regular tip cutting ensures that the hair grows faster
Hair doesn’t start to grow faster just by cutting it a couple of inches. The hair just looks fuller after a visit to the hairdresser. Because: Those who have not cut their hair for a long time will get frayed and thinned tips over time.
Myth 2: Daily washing is bad for your hair
It is true that hair is stressed by brushing and blow-drying, but not by washing in detail. So as long as you take good care of your hair, showering will not be a problem or even harmful to your hair.
Myth 3: If you wash your hair frequently, you promote faster greasing
Whether and how quickly the hair becomes greasy depends on the sebaceous glands in the hair root. How much fat they produce varies from woman to woman. Above all, skin type and age are decisive. But: Especially in the past, there were aggressive shampoos that cleaned the scalp very thoroughly and thus stimulated it to produce more grease. Nowadays, so-called re-fattening agents in shampoos are supposed to prevent this.
Myth 4: Split ends can be cured with the right care products
Hair split means that the tips of the hair have split into two parts. This split can even extend up to the hair root. Once this is the case, the two hairpieces cannot simply grow back together. Many beauty products such as shampoos, cures or conditioners are advertised with the repair of split ends, but this only means that damaged tips are glued together so that they look more groomed and do not break off.
Myth 5: Stress can lead to hair loss
Stress is not the only factor that can lead to hair loss. But several hair research studies have already proven that stress can influence the hair cycle, which can promote hair loss. As soon as the stress subsides, the hair cycle regulates itself again. If this is not the case, it is advisable to ask a doctor for advice.
Myth 6: A hundred brush strokes a day make the hair shine
Frequent brushing detangles the hair, smoothes the hair structure and allows the light to reflect better on the hair surface. This ensures that the hair looks more groomed. It also distributes the scalp grease in the lengths and tips. This results in a beautiful shine. Nevertheless it is not advisable to brush the hair too often. Because: every mechanical action stretches the hair fibre, making it porous. In the long run this can damage the hair. Therefore it is important to use soft brushes. Wild boar bristles, for example, are nice and soft.
Myth 7: Care products lose their effect with regular use
You’ve been using the same product line for several years and feel that it doesn’t make your hair as shiny and smooth as it was when you started? Unfortunately, this may indeed be true. If you use the product for a longer period of time, it can no longer fully develop its care effect. Tip: Simply buy a second care product and use it now and then instead of your actual favourite shampoo. This will work wonders!
Myth 8: Cold water makes for more shine
And the reason is very simple. Cold water smoothes the cuticle layer of the hair, making it reflect light better. The result is an extra portion of shine. But the cold rinse cycle has more than just visual advantages. When the hair is warm, it is particularly sensitive and breaks off more quickly, especially when combed. If, on the other hand, it is cooled down beforehand, it is much more durable.
Myth 9: If you pull out a gray hair, you will get two new ones as a reward
Whoever says fight the grey hairs will unfortunately lose. But not because they grow back in large numbers after being plucked out, but because it is the course of time that our hair turns grey at some point. So we can confidently continue plucking what the hair gives away without being afraid that the grey hairs will take an extra bo – but we still can’t stop them in the long run! Instead of losing our precious hair, it might be worthwhile to go to the hairdresser of our choice.
Myth 10: Combing wet hair is harmful
After washing, our hair is much more sensitive – wild combing and brushing therefore tears out unnecessarily many hairs and leads to hair breakage. A good alternative: Let the hair dry and then gently untangle it with a coarse comb.
