Sun protection is mandatory for expectant mothers. What you should look out for when choosing your sunscreen during pregnancy. We will explain it!
Pregnant to enjoy the sun? Sure. Because with the right sun protection, expectant mothers do not have to give up relaxed sunbathing. What you should consider when it comes to sunscreen during pregnancy – the most important facts and tips!
Sunscreen in Pregnancy: How the skin reacts during pregnancy
During pregnancy, the skin and body are particularly sensitive to the sun. Due to hormonal changes, it tends to develop pigmentation spots more quickly. In addition, the skin on the stomach is thinner during pregnancy and therefore more sensitive to sunburn. Skin problems or freckles can also occur.
This is the right one!
Sun protection with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50 is ideal!) is obligatory for expectant mothers! But please without chemical filters. These convert the UV radiation into heat and the skin heats up even more, thus posing a great risk for the expectant mother and her baby. In addition, the substances can get directly into the bloodstream through the skin or even be passed on to the baby through breast milk. Ideal is a hypoallergenic sun cream with a mineral UV filter. Ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, for example, reflect the rays and thus prevent them from penetrating the skin.
Even more tips on sun protection
A mineral sun cream with a high SPF is important, but does not fully protect against sunburn. If you want to enjoy the sun without regrets during pregnancy, you should follow these tips:
- Wear airy clothing and a sun hat. Cotton, linen or silk in particular are permeable to air and additionally shield the sensitive skin from too much sun.
- Anyone who is pregnant should generally avoid excessive sunbathing. The high temperatures can quickly lead to circulatory problems. In addition, the UV rays break down folic acid in the first weeks of pregnancy.
- Avoid the intense midday sun. Better to enjoy the sun early in the morning or towards evening.
- Enough drinking! Two to three litres of water or unsweetened tea are a must!
