Removing Blood Stains: The Best Home Remedies

Whether for minor injuries in the household or due to abrasions while the kids are playing – blood quickly gets onto fabric fibres. But with the right home remedies, the blood stains can be easily removed.

For stain removal we do not only reluctantly resort to chemical clubs, but there are actually helpful home remedies against blood stains that everyone has in the house. In general, the following applies to the removal of stains: The faster we treat the blood stains, the easier it is to remove them from clothes, sheets and similar items.

Removing fresh blood stains: Home remedy for washable fabrics

• Cold water: Never treat a blood stain with hot water, as the protein in the blood will clot and the stain will be more difficult to remove. If it is fresh, on the other hand, it can easily be removed with cold water. Soak the stain, wash the garment as usual – that’s it.
• Mineral water: If there is no tap nearby, even carbonated water works wonders. Wash the textiles afterwards in the usual way.

Removing dried blood stains: Home remedies for washable fabrics

• Washing powder: Whether dried stains on clothing, bed sheets or other washable textiles – a cold water bath is helpful here. Especially with the addition of washing powder. Wash as usual after soaking the blood stains.
• Salt: A salt bath is also effective against bloodstains. Stain removal works as described above.
• Liquid soap: Instead of washing powder and salt, liquid soap can also be used. Simply soak and rinse.
• Gall soap: Older blood stains can also be soaked in water and rubbed with gall soap (or curd soap). Finally, put the laundry in the normal wash.
• Lemon juice or aspirin: Other natural stain removers are lemon juice and aspirin. Sprinkle the stain with the juice or dissolved tablet and leave to work. The citric acid will make the stain disappear – by the way, also clean the baking tray.
• Ammonia: Less sensitive materials can also be soaked in ammonia. Once the ammonia has been washed out, there is no longer a blood stain. Ammonia also helps when cleaning windows.

Removing blood stains from wool

• Potato starch / cornstarch: With the right household remedies you can also easily remove bloodstains from wool. A mash of potato starch or cornstarch and cold water is effective here. Apply the paste to the blood stain and massage it in. Leave to take effect and wash as usual. The same applies to removing red wine stains.
• Soda or baking powder: For stain removal on wool, a paste of soda and water or baking powder and water also helps. These agents also help to clean the oven.

Removing blood stains from silk

Alcohol: Pure alcohol is especially effective against blood stains on sensitive fabrics such as silk. Dab the alcohol on the stain and then wash it by hand.
