It’s often like being jinxed: Although you sleep eight hours every night, on some days you feel rested and on others as if you’ve been on the wheel. But why is that? It’s because of our sleep patterns. There are three phases: light, deep and REM sleep. The three phases form a sleep cycle that lasts approximately 90 minutes. If we wake up in a light or REM sleep phase, we usually feel quite rested and start the day well.
This alarm clock better not disturb our deep sleep!
It looks different when the alarm clock rings in the middle of a deep sleep phase. And surely everyone has experienced this at least once: it feels as if the sound of the alarm clock is coming from far away, sometimes you can’t even sort it out as an alarm clock ringing at first. The eyes can only be opened with a lot of resistance and we blink disorientated and confused at first while trying to shake off the sleep. If we are torn out of our deep sleep, we are guaranteed to feel as if we are tired all day long.
What is my optimal sleeping time?
But how can I prevent the alarm clock from waking me in a deep sleep phase? Very simple: By going to sleep at the optimal time. And this is much easier than you might think – because the experts on the “Sleep Calculator have” page have already done the calculation for us! They assume that it takes about 15 minutes to fall asleep and that you will go through at best five to six full sleep cycles per night. Here are a few typical examples of the optimal sleeping time if you have to work the next day:
- Get up at 6:00: 8:45, 10:15, 11:45, 1:15
- Get up at 6:30: 21:15, 22:45, 00:15, 01:45
- Get up at 7:00: 21:45, 23:15, 00:45, 02:15
- Get up at 7:30: 10:15, 11:45, 1:15, 2:45
- Get up at 8:00: 22:45, 00:15, 01:45, 03:15

Attention: How much sleep each person needs is individually different. Therefore, you should not only check when you go to sleep, but also whether you get enough hours of rest. Most people are fit and alert with seven to eight hours of sleep per night, some need less, some more. If you are very tired every morning for a long period of time and feel tired, this is a good indication that you should change your bedtime.
