Dust, dirt or stains – backpacks can get dirty quickly. Here you can find out what you have to consider when you want to wash your backpack.
Often there is this one rucksack that accompanies us always and everywhere – whether shopping, hiking, city trip or beach trip. Logically, this backpack has to go through a lot and needs a wash every now and then. We explain to you how you can best clean your backpack!
Backpack washing in the washing machine?
Basically: A trekking backpack or hiking rucksack must never be put in the washing machine! Not only will the coating break and the backpack including the buckles can be damaged, but also the washing machine can be affected. Never wash backpacks in the washing machine! Do not put the backpack in the dryer either, as the coating and materials can be damaged.
Washing your backpack by hand: You have to pay attention to that!
Dust, mud or stains from spilled food are best cleaned while the dirt is still fresh. A rag and mild soap can be used here on the go. Otherwise wash the backpack after the tour!
Light soiling:
- Empty the backpack.
- Hold the backpack upside down and shake it out to remove crumbs, sand, etc. A vacuum cleaner if necessary for help.
- With a damp microfiber cloth you can wipe out the interior. Repeat the same for the outside. For dried up liquids a mild soap can be used.
- If wiping does not produce any effect, rinse the outside with lukewarm water in the shower. Upholstered parts can be squeezed out like a sponge and are thus cleaned more thoroughly.
Heavy soiling:
- Empty backpack and shake out.
- Remove dried mud with a brush. Rinse off the outside.
- Fill the bathtub with lukewarm water and some mild detergent (no detergent containing chlorine!). Let the rucksack soak for a while.
- Remove stains and dirt with a microfiber cloth or a gentle brush. Wipe out the interior.
- Rinse upholstery and foam parts several times and press out.
- Clean the zippers with a toothbrush.
- Rinse the backpack with the shower spray until only clear water passes through.
Drying your backpack
- Squeeze all padding thoroughly to remove excess water.
- Hang the backpack upside down in a ventilated place. Caution: A lot of water may run off, so use the clothesline outside or the bathroom.
- Do not stow the backpack away until it is really dry, otherwise mold can form!
Aftercare
- For the zippers to work without problems, they should be sprayed with silicone spray after each wash and then dried and pulled back and forth several times.
- Impregnation is not necessary after every wash cycle, but is occasionally necessary. For this purpose, there are liquid impregnation agents and impregnation spray, which are applied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
