For some parents, the idea of dressing up their little one’s bedroom is daunting — and that’s because it can be. What theme should you pick? What color should the walls be? What furniture is best? Well, don’t fret! We’ve put together this handy guide to walk you through every aspect of decorating your child’s room from floor to ceiling.
One of the first things you have to decide is what type of room you want to decorate as a child. Are you going for a classic Disney theme? A space-themed room? A boy’s vs. a girl’s bedroom? If you don’t know, the solution is easy: take some time and play with a few different options. See how they feel, and then settle on one that feels right — but don’t be afraid to mix it up from time to time!
In addition to this all-important decision, there are some other factors that will impact your final layout — such as budget, style preference and whether or not your child will be sharing their room with siblings. Once you’ve taken care of the basics, it’s time to have some fun and get creative! Here are some basic tips to get you started:
Tip #1: Start with a theme. If you want your room to make sense, then pick a theme and stick with it. We recommend starting simple — perhaps picking one color scheme (like blues, greens or greys) or deciding on one specific character to work around (such as Princess Jasmine from Aladdin). Don’t go overboard just yet — remember, there’s no harm in changing your mind if you do!
Tip #2: Don’t forget about the walls! Once the furniture is all in place (see below), spend some time looking at the walls. The right wallpaper can completely change the way a room feels, so think about what you’d like to see on the walls before making a decision. Do you prefer a solid color or a pattern? Bold, neon hues or something more subtle? Prints and patterns can also be used for accent walls — try using it behind furniture that will serve as your focal point.
Tip #3: Furniture should be fun! Remember that your little one will be using this furniture on a daily basis — it’s important to find pieces that are comfortable and versatile (such as bunks, dressers and nightstands). For those all-important beds, we recommend trying out several variations until you find one that fits with your style.
Tip #4: Add a Little Color! Sure, the classic Disney-themed room needs to be kept simple, but try thinking outside the box and adding some color! Just make sure that you focus on bright, bold colors — anything more delicate will look out of place in this environment.
Tip #5: Decide how you want to decorate your room. As we mentioned above, there are several ways that you can work with a classic Disney theme — perhaps choosing one specific character (like Alice from Alice in Wonderland or Cinderella) or creating a space-themed look (such as the Star Wars room). The key is to have fun and make sure that you and your little one are happy with the end result.
Tip #6: Make it an activity! Decorating a room is great — but what makes it truly fun is the fact that it can actually be turned into an actual activity. Create a sketch book where the kids can write down ideas, then loot around and make a plan to follow through. This will keep the kids involved and help them to feel a sense of ownership in their new room!
If you can keep these tips in mind, you should be able to decorate your child’s bedroom with ease. As long as we have a budget and know what we want, we can execute our decorating plan just fine. Try some of these skills the next time you’re planning on decorating your kids’ bedroom! There are plenty of ideas out there; good luck!
