With which tricks you can cut onions without crying, we tell you in this practical tip.
Cut onions without crying – This is how it works
Onions are healthy, can be used in many ways in the kitchen and are the ingredient for many good dishes. But as soon as they are cut or peeled, the cells of the onion release substances that make your eyes water. In nature, these gases are supposed to keep away predators. To ensure that you never lose tears again when cutting onions, we have summarised some tricks for preparation in this article:
- Before you start cutting the onion, you should water your chopping board a little. This will allow less irritant gases from the onion to rise to the top.
- You should also use a sharp knife, as this will cause less damage to the gonads and therefore a smaller amount of the irritant is released.
No more crying when cutting onions
After you have prepared everything, you can easily process onions without crying with the following tips:
- Tip 1: Only breathe through your mouth and not through your nose. This will protect your mucous membranes and keep your eyes dry. If necessary, you can also carefully pinch your nose.
- Tip 2: Cut the onion while sitting. In this way, the sulphur-containing ingredients that rise vertically upwards cannot get into your eyes.
- Tip 3: Fill a bowl with water and peel the onion directly under water.
- Tip 4: Keep a sip of water in your mouth while cutting onions. Your eyes will stop watering.
- Tip 5: Cut the onion with an open window so that the irritating fumes can escape. If necessary, switch on your extractor hood.
- Tip 6: Cut the roots of the onion last, because they contain a lot of the unpleasant gases.
- Tip 7: Chop onions quickly and without a teardrop using the right food processor.
