How do you properly cover dark circles under the eyes, bumps or unsightly skin blemishes? We’ll give you tips and tricks for applying concealers.
By applying concealer, you can achieve a lot: It provides a fresh look within seconds, covers annoying spots skillfully and can even visually reduce the first wrinkles. But not all concealers are the same. We tell you where the differences lie in the various products and how to apply concealer correctly.
What is concealer?
The term concealer comes from the English word “to conceal” and means something like “cover” – and that is exactly its function. It easily covers redness, pimples, scars, as well as wrinkles. Stars like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner also use it to contour their faces.
The first concealer came onto the market in the USA as early as 1954 and was produced by the Max Factor company in the form of a concealer stick.
Cover stick or concealer – The differences
Concealer is available in different versions: As a stick, in liquid variant or in solid form as part of a palette. Each of them serves a different purpose and has its advantages.
- Liquid concealer: Most of us probably know this variant. It comes in an elongated package along with an applicator for application in the lid, but sometimes also from the tube. This concealer is ideal for covering dark circles under the eyes.
- Cover stick: use this product to cover pimples or conceal redness. Some also use it to draw contours.
- The concealer palette: in a concealer palette you will find different concealers for different skin types and applications. You can read more about this below.
For this purpose, there are concealers in particularly liquid, creamy or powdery consistency. Here you should then consider your skin type: Particularly liquid products offer only a light covering power, which can, however, be strengthened by applying several times. It is suitable for all skin types.
Creamy concealers contain many pigments and provide much stronger coverage. It is suitable for normal, dry, sensitive and impure skin.
Products with powdery consistency are very firm and have high coverage. They are not recommended for very dry and mature skin, as they settle in the wrinkles of the skin and automatically make you look older. Rather, this concealer is suitable for combination skin.
The ideal shade
As with foundation, the same applies to concealer: the color should be as lighter as possible than your own skin tone. If the product is too dark, skin blemishes and wrinkles will be intensified rather than reduced. If the color of the concealer is too light, it can quickly appear mask-like. For this purpose, you should test the shade in daylight and directly on the face – the back of the hand is not suitable for this, because its color does not quite match the skin of the face.
If the concealer has a tinge of orange or peach, it is best suited to cover dark circles under the eyes, because it makes blue veins invisible. A green concealer conceals pimples, while yellow-tinted products even out skin imperfections.
