Getting Pregnant: 9 Tips to Make It Happen

You have decided to have a baby and are eagerly waiting for a positive pregnancy test? We have put together 9 tips to make it happen faster.

Getting pregnant is not so easy for many people. Most couples find months of hibernating and testing gruelling. With increasing age it becomes more and more difficult to get pregnant. A year’s wait is not unusual. But with our tips you can increase your chances of a positive pregnancy test.

1. Hello Cycle! Nice to meet you

The most important question you ask yourself when you have a desire to have children is: When are my fertile days? Within a cycle you can only get pregnant in a very specific phase – namely around ovulation. And to help you determine this correctly, it’s worth getting to know your cycle a little better. Meanwhile, the following provide support:

  • Fertility Apps
  • Ovulation tests
  • Fertility computers that show you when you can get pregnant.

But actually it is enough to observe your body very closely by using NFP – natural family planning. The symptothermal method is based on the signals that your body sends you all by itself. Based on your basal body temperature and the composition of the cervical mucus or even the cervix, you can determine your ovulation with a little practice and thus draw conclusions about fertile and infertile days.

Good timing can significantly increase your chances of pregnancy. It is most likely to work on the two to three days before ovulation. By the way: sperm survive up to five days. The actual fertilisation can also take place days after sex.

However, you should avoid it at all costs: oily lubricants can change the vaginal environment, causing the sperm to slow down or even die. Such lubricants can then be the reason why fertilisation and implantation of the egg does not occur.

2. Please go to the doctor once

If you have made a conscious decision to become pregnant, a visit to the gynaecologist to have a check-up cannot hurt. In particular, undetected infections can lead to complications if the desire for a child is not fulfilled. Your doctor can also give you valuable tips and recommendations if you are planning to have a baby and, of course, will advise you on any medication you may be taking regularly.

You should also have your vaccination status checked. If you are not sufficiently immune to rubella or chickenpox, you should have your vaccination before you become pregnant. If you become infected during pregnancy, this can have serious consequences for the baby.

Even a visit to the dentist in advance can do no harm. Background: On the one hand, it should be checked preventively whether there are still construction sites that need to be treated under anaesthesia. At the same time, oral hygiene is particularly important during pregnancy. Because chronic inflammations in the oral cavity can:

  • have a negative effect on both male and female gametes.
  • be quite painful
  • have an influence on fertility when the aggressive germs enter the vagina, for example through oral sex
  • increase the risk of early miscarriage
  • induce early labour, for example when the bacteria reach the placenta via the bloodstream

So don’t forget your teeth and have them checked regularly before and during pregnancy. Prophylactically, professional tooth cleaning is also recommended.

3. Sleep well

Sleep keeps you healthy and your body balanced. This also applies to your cycle. If you sleep badly and irregularly for a long time, this can have a negative effect on your cycle. The result: delayed or non-ovulation and the associated fertile days. This is because increased melatonin is produced at night, which in turn reduces the LH hormone that is important for ovulation. In short: Fertility needs daylight.

By the way, this also applies to long-distance travel with extreme time changes and special climatic changes. Both can influence your cycle. If you want to be on the safe side, it is better to travel to less exotic destinations if you want to have children.

4. Take care of yourself and your body

Our weight has a great influence on our well-being – and on our cycle. Too many kilos on the scales, but also extreme underweight, can be the cause of a disturbed cycle and even lead to the absence of periods. Of course, this does not mean that the weight has to have such an influence. But your health should still come first.

5. Getting pregnant? Relax!

Don’t overthink it. Just don’t put too much pressure on it. Instead, just relax and go into your family planning: Easier said than done. Especially if getting pregnant doesn’t work out right away. After all, you hope and worry every month anew, and you might even experience disappointment many times. What helps: Be aware that a year’s wait is not at all unusual when you want to have a child. Stress only hurts. You should rather consciously take the time to switch off! Maybe you’ll go away together, just take a leisurely walk in the park, have a romantic dinner or go to the cinema.
Skin thing stress-free! Because: The stress hormone adrenaline is an antagonist of the fertility hormones. In women this can even be the reason for a reduced maturation of the egg cell. In men, stress has a negative effect on sperm production in the epididymis. So make yourself beautiful and relaxed – both of you.

6. Have a good diet!

Healthy food can promote fertility. Conversely, this means: Get to the stove and conjure up a tasty menu together. What should be on the menu?

For you:

  • Folic acid: a deficiency restricts fertility and can lead to malformations in the baby in the first weeks of pregnancy. This is why gynaecologists recommend taking folic acid preparations.
  • Iron: important for haemoglobin production, also later in the baby. Found in red meat and red juices, for example.
  • Iodine: essential for the development of your baby even during early pregnancy.
  • Vitamin E: requires the fertilised egg to implant itself in the uterus.

For your husband:

  • Vitamins C, E and B 1: promote sperm formation and are found in peppers, citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, dairy products, meat, fish and eggs.
  • Magnesium and zinc depots are also important and are found in pumpkin seeds, seafood, oatmeal and beans

By the way: It is better to avoid excessive alcohol consumption. Background: alcohol affects fertility and, in men, sperm density. The situation is similar with caffeine: but one or two cups a day does not hurt.

7. Sports free!

Taking care of your body and doing sports regularly is of course not only healthy for people who want to have children. The same also applies to smoking. Now is definitely the right time to take better care of yourself. By the way: Fit women often experience pregnancies that are less prone to complications and are back on their feet more quickly after giving birth. Isn’t that an incentive?

8. Have sex! And it’s just the way you want it.

And then do a headstand for half an hour afterwards! What a crap. All around having children, old wives’ tales are piling up. I’m sure you’ve heard that it’s easier to get pregnant in certain positions. This is just as unfounded as the use of soft cups to prevent sperm from running out again, or the claim that abstinence could improve sperm quality. On the contrary, the quality of the sperm even improves during regular sex. Well then: Have fun.

9. Your climax

It is no secret that the man must have an orgasm in order to have any chance of getting pregnant. But that it also increases the chances of pregnancy if you get your money’s worth is not known to many. A female orgasm and the contractions of the uterus can help the sperm to find the right path and thus be of great advantage in the fertilisation and implantation of the egg.
