A facial massage can not only release tension in the face, it is also the perfect strategy to reduce expression lines.
Facial massage – release tensions in the face
We grit our teeth. Even at night. Stress shows itself immediately – first in our face. In case of nervous tension, our jaw muscles are strained, even the forehead area is affected. Forehead wrinkles are often caused by our facial expressions – the famous frown line, for example. It manifests itself with pleasure and makes us appear angry even when we are not. With a facial massage, tense areas of the face can be loosened and expression lines do not dig so deeply into our facial skin. Of course you can book a professional facial massage with a masseur – but we will show you a few simple tricks for self-massage, which you can try out more intensively in the morning or evening.
Prepare for facial massage
- Before the facial massage starts, hands and face should be cleaned.
- In the evening is a great time for the massage because our movements naturally stimulate the blood circulation of our skin – redness needs time to subside.
- Afterwards, nourishing ingredients from our night care are perfectly absorbed into the skin and overnight the skin can soothe and recover.
- So that the fingertips glide well over the face, facial oil (pure coconut or almond oil is also possible) or night cream are perfect as a base.
- If you like, you can also massage once a week with an exfoliating cream – for sensitive skin, about three minutes of massage is enough.
Massage the face – step by step
At the beginning, gently stroke first: Gently place both hands on the face and stroke without pressure sideways outwards to the base of the ears and down over the neck. It is also good to knead the soft parts of our ears: We start at the earlobes and press gently upwards.
Forehead massage – soothe frown lines
- Massage the temples and forehead in circular movements with two fingertips.
- If you want to relax your frown line, start at the root of the nose and gently stroke the temples on both sides with two fingers. Do not pull the skin too much.
- Eyes and eyebrows follow every facial expression – a light tapping massage on the eyebrows and around the eye is beneficial. This is also a good way to pat in your eye cream. But the pressure of your finger when tapping should not be too hard, the area around the eye is very sensitive and the skin there is thinner than in other areas of the face.
- To release tension, place the index finger on the inner end of the brows and slowly form circles around the eyes.
- Place the right hand crosswise on the forehead and let it slide gently to the side, then stroke it to the side with the left hand. Apply more or less pressure depending on how you feel.
- Eye massage against tired eyes: Close the eyelids and massage along the crease of the eyelid along the bone under the brow from the inside to the outside. Then press the deepest point in the inner corner of the eye for three seconds and stroke down the nose.
- The hairline on the forehead, neck and scalp love massages. The scalp massage also has a positive effect on the hair, because the hair roots are better supplied with blood.
Relax naso-labial area
Place thumb and index finger on the upper end of the nose and press slightly. Then let the fingers gently slide down the nose several times. The mouth relaxes with a tapping massage (this also does good on the lips), also with circular finger movements between lips and nostrils do good.
Release jaw tension
- Lower the head slightly and massage and tap everyone with the fingertips around the jaw joint.
- Pass the tongue through the outer mouth and massage the cheeks from the inside. Also massage the gums with your tongue. Also move the head loosely and open the mouth. Just like the celebrities: Meghan Markle, who has her mouth massaged from the inside by a London facial expert, is also said to rely on a massage of the mouth and tongue.
- Pressing an acupressure point can also loosen the jaw: Place a finger in the small hollow next to the earlobe on both sides of the face. This is where the jaw joint begins. Press for about 15-30 seconds, repeat several times.
- Anyone who feels strong tension in the jaw area, crunches at night and presses their teeth together can have a splint fitted by the dentist. The costs are covered by health insurance. In most cases, headaches and neck tensions are also relieved.
- The chin also enjoys small massage grips through circular movements or tapping movements.
Face massage against wrinkles
Whether facial massages demonstrably help against wrinkles is not scientifically proven. But: light kneading boosts our metabolism, the blood circulation of the cells runs at full speed and anti-aging active ingredients that subsequently hit our skin can work better. A face brush or derma rollers (jade rollers, which are very trendy and used in Chinese medicine) can also be used to stimulate the blood circulation – the complexion appears refreshed, dead skin cells are removed and new ones are formed.
