Unsightly lime stains and deposits quickly make the shower look dirty. We introduce you to homemade cleaners with which it quickly shines with a new shine!
Cleaning the shower enclosure is certainly not one of the most popular household activities for most people. Nevertheless, the bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house and we naturally want to feel comfortable there when we enjoy our daily shower. Here we reveal the tips, tricks and household remedies that will help you get the shower clean quickly. So lime stains and dirt don’t stand a chance anymore.
Cleaning shower? Prevention is better!
Actually, we know it and yet we don’t do it: directly after showering, wipe the tiles and the shower cubicle with a rubber squeegee to prevent lime and dirt. Regular cleaning helps to prevent stubborn stains.
Here’s how you do it:
- After showering, first rinse tiles and shower walls with cold water so that all soap residues are rinsed off.
- Then use the squeegee to pull off the walls horizontally strip by strip, rub the chrome parts dry with a towel.
Tips for cleaning the shower
Normally, just a few homemade cleaners are enough to really clean up our bathroom. However, with certain materials, such as marble, you should be careful when using such products. Vinegar, for example, can lead to corrosion, but limescale cleaners would also decompose it. What you should pay attention to when cleaning marble is shown here.
Cleaning glass shower walls
On glass you can unfortunately quickly see unsightly stains – but there is a trick you can use to avoid them! You need a spray bottle, a cloth and: Rinse aid! Originally intended for the dishwasher, the effect also works on your glass shower wall. Here’s how you do it:
- Pour some of the rinse aid into an empty and cleaned spray bottle.
- Wet the glass wall with the rinse aid and
- Distribute it evenly with a cloth.
Why does this trick work? The rinse aid improves the drying of the dishes in the dishwasher by the non-ionic surfactants it contains reducing the surface tension of the water, making it roll off better. And this works not only for your dishes in the dishwasher, but also for the shower screen 😎! In this way you prevent lime stains from forming again quickly.
Other homemade products for glass walls are:
- Citric acid: Mix a shot of the acid with a bowl of water and spread the mixture on the wall. Rinse with cold water or wipe with a sponge.
- Vinegar: Pour some vinegar in a bowl of water and spread the mixture on the wall with a sponge. After a soaking time of up to 20 minutes, rinse with clear water and polish with a cloth.
Tip: These household remedies could possibly be bad for the rubber seals and affect them. As a precaution, clean them only with water or less aggressive cleaners.
Cleaning plastic walls
For plastic walls you can use soft soap. You apply this with a damp sponge, rub it in and then rinse it off. Finally, rub the shower wall dry.
Caution: Only use the smooth side of the sponge, as the walls are sensitive to scratches.
Washing the shower curtain
A shower curtain is actually easier to clean than many a shower screen! Nevertheless, care should not be neglected. Therefore you should wash the shower curtain regularly. Some can be washed in the washing machine using the delicates programme. Have a look at the label! Otherwise, these products help:
- Citric acid: Mix water and citric acid and apply to the curtain. Rinse everything off after half an hour soaking time. The acid works well against bacteria and lime.
- Vinegar: Vinegar also has an antibacterial effect. Mix it with water and rub it on the shower curtain. Finally rinse with clear water.
You can also clean your bathtub with this household knit – all you need is a fruit.
Cleaning tiles
Not only should the glass or plastic walls be cleaned of dirt and stains, we also clean the tiles, of course. Suitable household cleaners for tiles:
- With a shot of all-purpose cleaner, washing-up liquid or glass cleaner, light soiling disappears quickly from the tiles.
- Cleaning with vinegar or vinegar cleaner also unfolds its effect here.
Tip: ammonia solution gives tiles more shine again!
Cleaning joints
While tiles are rather easy to clean, joints can be a hard nut to crack. The best way to deal with this is with baking powder:
- Mix some of the powder with water until you get a paste-like consistency.
- Put this on a damp sponge or old toothbrush and brush the paste onto the affected areas.
- Let it soak in for several minutes and rinse with water.
Instead of baking powder you can also use baking soda, make sure you use a mixing ratio of water and baking soda of 3:1.
Cleaning fittings
The tap can also be cleaned with the well-known household remedies vinegar and citric acid. Mix some of the vinegar or citric acid with water and wipe the faucet with it! For particularly stubborn stains, you can also let the mixture work and then wipe over it again. Farewell to lime stains!
Removing mould in the bathroom
Mould in the bathroom is not without danger and should definitely be eliminated. You can try to remove the mould with these products:
- Pure alcohol: Apply the pure alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) from the pharmacy to the mould and brush it in.
- Vinegar: Vinegar can also help against mould (do not use it on silicone!). Apply it diluted with water and let it work for about half an hour. Then brush off the affected areas again.
Be sure to wear gloves if you use any of these products! Both methods remove the mould for the time being, but have no long-term effect. So the black spots can come back! Ideally, the mould is prevented immediately by drying the corners and fittings of the bathtub and shower cubicle after showering. In addition, the room should be properly ventilated if possible.
Cleaning is not one of your favourite activities? With this cleaning schedule method, the household is much easier to manage.
