All living creatures in the world are programmed to reproduce and continue their descendants. Motherhood instinct is found in almost all living things. For example, animals such as crocodiles and lions, which are shown as symbols of wildlife, are very loving and protective against their offspring.
People are considered the most advanced living things in the world. While the breeding season of many animals is limited to a certain period of the year, there is a chance every month for pregnancy in human. However, a couple can consciously prevent pregnancy throughout a lifetime. This gives to the human the opportunity to schedule the pregnancy as long as there is no problem.
The basic requirement for a healthy pregnancy is that your pregnancy is planned in advance. This requires both women and men to be psychologically, socioeconomically and bodily ready. The results of unplanned and involuntary pregnancies are worse than those planned. Especially when a woman is not ready for pregnancy, problems are more frequently encountered during pregnancy follow-up, at birth and even after delivery.
It is normal to have concerns about pregnancy and later for women who are considering pregnancy. First of all, after having a child the responsibility that it will bring is considered. The worries that start with questions such as “Can I look after my baby?” sometimes extend to the dimension of “Can I educate my child on ideal conditions?”. Employees and those who care about their career may think that the child to be born may sometimes prevent they from rising in the business. Apart from these, every woman who cares about physiology and external appearance may be worried about deformations that may occur in her bodies. Such concerns are natural and humane. However, being ready for pregnancy means accepting the sacrifices that must be made for a baby.
It is not enough that only an expectant mother is ready for pregnancy. An expectant father also must be aware of this. It should not be forgotten that motherhood and fatherhood are a role that must be played right throughout life and there is no turning back.
In addition to preparing for pregnancy, psychological and physical, it is also necessary to be ready socioeconomically. Care of the child to be born, preschool and school stages should also be considered. The money spent on the development and education of children draws attention as the most important item in a family budget.
Assuming that all the conditions listed above are fulfilled, a mother’s pre-pregnancy health check comes into play. It is recommended that gynecological examination be done at least 6 months before the planning of pregnancy. Except for the general health examination and routine gynecological examination, a mother’s immune status against diseases that can affect a baby during pregnancy, other blood tests including thyroid function are also examined. The diseases that expectant parents may be carriers are questioned. It is assessed whether or not an expectant mother has the ideal height-weight ratio for a healthy pregnancy. Erosion of the cervix that may prevent pregnancy or maintaining the pregnancy, the presence of diseases that involve the female genital system such as cysts in the ovaries or fibroids in the uterus are investigated and treatment is provided if necessary.
