Whether platinum white, honey gold or ash blonde: everyone wants to be blonde! We have the best tips for care and coloring blonde hair – plus hairstyle ideas.
Everyone loves blonde hair!
Blonde is glamorous, bright, exciting – like a radiant light that attracts everyone’s attention. It was not for nothing that actress Norma Jean Baker bleached her brunette locks platinum before she became famous under the stage name Marilyn Monroe in 1946. To this day, many women imitate her. And 70 percent of all blondes still want to be a touch brighter.
How nice: The cosmetics industry has developed many new, type-suitable possibilities to blonde more easily and permanently. An overview of blonde hair color and how to make it even blonder.
Lighten blonde naturally
If you want to shine even more blonde, you can use shampoos and conditioners that gently lighten blonde hair. With a mixture of lactic acid, camomile and lemon extracts, they change the color so minimally with each application that you need not be afraid to get carried away in the tone and suddenly be hydrogen blonde.
After about four applications, a difference can be seen; overall, a brightening of at least two shades can be achieved. But: a natural dark blonde is a big trend this year.
Lighten blond by two shades
If you want a somewhat faster change, have your hairdresser apply an ammonia-free color that lightens blonde hair by one to 2.5 nuances and also does not attack it as much as a conventional bleaching. Also new are home bleaches that gently lighten blonde hair by up to four shades with a special calcium complex.
Blond highlights – set highlights
If you color around several nuances, you should rather color highlights, otherwise the crass hairline will quickly become annoying. With long hair, rather softer shades of golden blonde are recommended, who likes also in combination of different shades of color from light blonde to caramel.
Dark blonde hair in particular is faced with a choice: Should it be interesting color plays in warm light brown shades or light blonde strands? In summer, we tend to use lighter colors, but this season’s favorites are highlights in the freehand brush technique Balayage, the Sombre Look (Soft Ombré) or Babylights (extremely fine blond highlights). In the fall we tend to go back to bronde – a mixture with brown nuances.
There are also highlight sets with which you can set your own bright highlights. But be careful: these often have such a strong blonding effect that they can lighten the hair by up to five shades. To avoid slips, home products should first be tested on a hidden strand. When applying the product, make sure to draw very fine strands. For a real platinum blonde à la Madonna, you should anyway better go to an experienced hairdresser.
Olaplex for blonde hair
If you dye your hair, you also stress it. And those who do not want to use scissors after coloration stress have been following the headlines attentively about a new product called Olaplex, which promises to permanently repair hair during and after chemical processes. From dark brown to platinum blond without damaging the structure.
And this is how it works: The inside of our hair consists of millions of disulfide bridges, which you can imagine as tiny conductors. When damaged, the rungs of the ladders break. Olaplex contains a molecule called bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, which is capable of permanently rebuilding these bridges.
This is how fast it works at the hairdresser: The odorless “No 1” is put into the hair with the color, the “No 2”, which smells of fruit gum, is added after rinsing, but before shampooing for at least ten minutes. The Olaplex treatment is now complete.
Ombré and Balayage
Also with blonde tones new trends become generally accepted each season just like with the haircut. Ombré and Balayage have long been offered as a gentle lightening on the hair as an alternative to the classic strands. Soft color gradients that are not a complete change of type and look so natural and casual are mega hip on the catwalk and on the streets.
The good news? Ombré suits almost everyone – provided you have a basic length (from shoulder length) and no short hairstyle. With ombré, as with balayage, (there only worked in more gently), a natural blonde shade (usually a golden blonde) is worked into the lower third of the hair with a brush. The course in the hair looks natural.
Tip: It’s better to have it done by a professional, because he can analyze the hair color exactly and see how dark the roots and how light the tips should be. Strawberry blond shades are also very popular at the moment. The slightly pink pigmentation makes the hair look lively. If the tone in the hair should appear bland quickly, a gloss helps, which is worked into the hair like a cure and should be washed out after a short time. This gives back a lot of shine.
Tips for blondes who want to shine more
For 78 percent of women, the biggest problem when bleaching hair is the right tone. Even if blondes wear a shiny blonde on their head immediately after going to the hairdresser, the hair color appears dull, yellowish or darker after just a few weeks. This is mainly due to pigments that are deposited on each hair, but are particularly easy to recognize on the light background.
This is remedied by care products that neutralize a yellow tint with purple pigments (e.g. “Lifetex Color Reflex Shampoo Shine Reflexes for blonde and gray hair” by Wella Professionals or “Color Gloss Blonde Refreshing Treatment” by Guhl). Or protect your hair from fading with UV filters and antioxidants (e.g. “brilliant blonde” by Nivea Hair Care).
Products (e.g. “Blond Care Highlights” by Garnier Fructis) are especially suitable for blonde highlights, as their caring active ingredients are deposited on the blonde areas. If you want to give your blonde a warmer or cooler shade, you can also refine it with an intensive tint (e.g. “Color Touch” from Wella Professionals).
If blonde hair is blow-dried by the hairdresser, it also looks more radiant, because he blows-dries from the roots to the tips, so that the cuticle layer attaches itself and reflects the light better. Some shampoos and conditioners (e.g. “Colour Renew” by John Frieda) try to imitate the effect with tiny particles that stick to the hair and reflect the light. This glamour is also brought about by shine styling products (e.g. “Ice Shine Hold & Shine Hairspray” from Pantene Pro-V), which are applied very gently over the hair and the hair color.
Tips for dark-haired people who want to become blond
If you have had dark blonde hair up to now and want to dye to blonde, you should choose exactly the right shade for your own complexion. While a cool undertone looks great with a reddish complexion and blue eyes, warm reflections look best with yellowish skin and brown eyes.
Eye white is also a good reference point: with a slight yellow shimmer, it is better to go for golden tones like a honey blonde. If it is bright white, cool nuances are best. If you are unsure, simply hold a piece of gold and silver foil next to your face one after the other and see which of the two makes it shine more. In this way, nothing stands in the way of blonde hair.
Tips for grey-haired people who want to become blond
If the hair is already white, a coloration can be used to introduce blonde color – in the case of gray hair, however, the remaining pigments must first be removed. Both require a bit of tact and sensitivity, so go to the hairdresser in any case! The hairdresser can also use special products that strengthen mature hair and make it look smoother.
Blond tips for all hair colors
Multicolored strands have the advantage that the regrowth is less noticeable. If you want to completely bleach your hair, you should use several shades – otherwise the result will quickly look artificial and helmet-like.
If you want to color your hair platinum blonde, you should also match your make-up: Instead of using bright red lipstick, it is now better to use soft rosé shades – but always emphasize the eyes, for example, by applying dark gray or black eye shadow to the upper and lower lashes and applying a thick coat of mascara. Also when tinting, make sure you go to the hairstyle: He manages to work only the roots and thus save the lengths without making the transitions look pale.
Is the blonde hair too yellow? How to reduce the yellow cast
Has the blonde become too yellow when dyed? Silver shampoo and rinse can help to reduce the yellow tint a little. Tiny, purple pigments are applied to the hair color and visually balance the yellow. Use two to three times a week.

Care for blonde tones – Care tips from the professional
John Frieda is the founder of the hair care label of the same name. His customers include famous blondes such as Meg Ryan, Cameron Diaz and Sarah Jessica Parker. He tells us his best tips for blonde hair:
What is the be-all and end-all for beautiful blond hair?
It needs to be cared for even more carefully than other hair colors: Use coordinated products, take a cure after every wash and comb your blonde hair as carefully as possible with a high-quality brush.
What do blondes have to pay attention to when grooming?
To avoid matting residues on the hair, shampoo and conditioner should be rinsed out carefully. Also try to avoid chlorine and salt water or wear a waterproof latex bathing cap when swimming. Otherwise you will easily get a green tinge in your hair. You can get rid of this by massaging aspirin dissolved in water into the hair.
And your personal tip?
Have your tips cut every two to three weeks, but not more than 2 millimeters: After one year, your hair will be twice as long, perfectly groomed and the hair color will be radiant.
These stars love blond hair
Of course, the looks of the stars also serve as inspiration for hairstyles that go with blonde hair. First and foremost, of course, super blonde Claudia Schiffer, who with her long hair in light blonde has served us as a template for hairdressing since the eighties. Middle parting and Sleek Look or soft waves – Claudia decides on that according to her mood.
Sarah Jessica Parker is our favorite model for two-tone dyeing techniques, just like Drew Barrymore, Kate Hudson and Heidi Klum. Gwyneth Paltrow and Sienna Miller are considered gold blond specialists. Jessica Biel and Julia Roberts prove how cool Bronde is. A nice example of blonde short hairstyles is Michelle Williams, who wears a blonde pixie.
