Do you want to balance greasy hair quickly? We show what helps with a greasy hair and how your hair looks fresh longer.
Why does my hair follicle grease so much?
No sooner have you washed your hair than it sticks to your head again. Annoying! Why is it that some of us suffer from greasy roots faster than others? There are five main reasons:
- Genetics: How quickly the scalp becomes oily is determined by our genes. It behaves similarly to the individual skin type. This cannot be changed completely. But with the right care you can bring it into balance. The same applies to the scalp.
- Aggressive care: Many hair care and styling products contain cosmetic alcohols, cleaning tensides or other chemicals that are very aggressive. This causes the scalp to dry out so much that the sebaceous glands are stimulated to produce. The result: greasy hair.
- Frequent washing: How often do you wash your hair? The roots get used to your typical washing rhythm. If you wash your hair every day, it will grease your hair very quickly.
- Hormonal imbalance: If the hormone level in our body changes, this is noticeable in skin and hair. A typical symptom of a hormonal imbalance is an increased fat production of the skin. This applies to the face, but also to the scalp. Taking (or stopping) the pill, medication or the menopause can upset the hormones. If you suspect this, you should rather consult a doctor.
- Nutrition: To prevent greasy hair, we must also keep an eye on our diet. Especially the intake of sugar or refined carbohydrates. These cause a rapid increase in insulin in the body, which in turn increases the androgens in the blood. And these are responsible for an increased production of sebum.
Hair greasy quickly can have very different reasons. But no matter what the cause is – with the following tips you can get oily hair under control quickly.
Change your diet
Since greasy hair can be caused by an unbalanced diet, you should take a closer look at food. As already revealed, foods rich in sugar can boost sebum production. Sweets, white bread, white rice or cornflakes should therefore rarely be eaten.
It is better to choose foods with a low glycemic index, also called GI. These allow insulin levels to rise less dramatically and keep you full for longer. Take vegetables, pulses or nuts more often. They convince with a low GI.
Don’t wash your hair often!
Even if it’s hard at first, you should wash your hair less often so that it doesn’t grease as quickly. This is the only way for the hair to get used to a new washing rhythm. In the first phase, your hair will naturally look a bit greasier because you use shampoo less often. This is quite normal.
But already after about two weeks you will notice that your hair will stay fresh much longer. And you don’t need a single additional product for this!
Apply dry shampoo properly to hair
To prevent greasy hair quickly, you should definitely use a good dry shampoo. You simply spray it on the roots, massage the powdery consistency briefly and then brush the hair thoroughly. But be careful: many of us don’t use dry shampoo properly. To delay greasy hair as long as possible, the timing of the application is crucial.
Dry shampoo should not be sprayed on after the hair is already greasy. It is much more effective to apply the product to the hair much earlier.
It is similar with face powder. We do not wait with the powdering also until we cannot save ourselves from oil shine any more. We take care by applying powder before the face shines. In the same way, we should also use dry shampoo for the hair. The powder particles absorb excess sebum and effectively delay the greasing of the hair.
Balance fast greasing hair with essential oil
There is a natural ingredient that has been shown to reduce sebum production at the base. And that is rosemary essential oil. Researchers could already prove in 1999 that rosemary oil has a balancing effect on the scalp. If the essential oil was regularly massaged into the skin, the hair appeared much less greasy.
Please make sure that you never apply essential oils undiluted on the hair, otherwise it can cause skin irritation. Mix three to four drops with a tablespoon of coconut oil or aloe vera gel and then apply the mixture to the scalp. Leave to take effect for at least 20 minutes and wash and care as usual.
Caution: Not every essential oil is suitable for your hair type. Please do not use essential Ylang Ylang oil if you want to balance a greasy roots. This oil is better suited for dry scalp and brittle hair, as the oil is said to stimulate sebum production.
Tie up your hair
In the so-called hair follicle, the excessive fat is produced that gets on our nerves so much. The sebum actually has a positive function: it cares for the scalp, keeps it healthy and also serves as a kind of lubricant for the hair. The sebum makes the hair break less.
Important to know: The hair follicles produce particularly large amounts of sebum when the hair moves. After all, the hair then needs more protection. But this also means that we have to worry more about greasy roots when the hair is open. After all, the hair swirls around quite a lot.
To quickly bring greasy hair into balance, you should therefore tie the hair together more often. Since the hair moves less in this state, less grease is produced. And this is exactly what we want! How about a nice bun or an elegant ponytail?
