How to Apply Blush: Tips for a Fresh Complexion

Applying blush is indispensable: it makes the complexion glow and creates contours. We explain which color tone is suitable and how to apply it.

The complexion is primed, the eyelid line is in place and the eyelashes are also mascaraed. What is still missing now is a little color on the cheeks. Because only a little blush completes the make-up and makes us look much more rested and fresh.

But blush can do much more: With blush we can model our face, make it slimmer or less angular and above all make it look younger. Applying blush: It’s very easy!

You can find the ideal line for blush by making a pout, placing the blush brush on the upper cheekbone and brushing along the depression created by the pout. Then spread some blush towards the temples and eyebrows.

Before applying the blush, tap the blush brush on the back of the hand to prevent too much color from landing on the cheeks. Stroke from the hairline over the cheeks towards the corner of the mouth. If you start the other way around, you risk real color bars.

How to find the right color

• Light skin: For blondes with light skin, a blush in a soft pink or rosé color is especially good. This conjures up a fresh complexion and looks super natural.
• Medium skin type: Medium skin types reach for more intensive blush nuances such as berry tones or a strong pink. To avoid hard edges, it is important to blend the blush carefully.
• Darker complexion: Brunettes with a darker complexion can wear blush in apricot especially well. With an olive complexion, a bronzer will show to perfect advantage. Here, too, it is important to start with a little color and add blush, otherwise you will get real color bars.

Powder, stick or cream blush: The agony of choice

Whether liquid, as cream or powder – the range of blushes is diverse. In terms of consistency, there are significant differences and advantages, depending on skin type.

Powder blush

Whether loose or pressed – powder blush is particularly suitable for oily skin and is applied to the complexion with a blush brush. Apply a foundation beforehand and matt the face with a little transparent powder. But please do not powder too much, because powdery textures can settle unsightly in the wrinkles.

Cream blush

Cream blush is ideal for dry skin and is particularly easy to dab on with the fingers. The body heat causes the creamy texture to practically melt into the skin and provides a natural makeup finish. However, cream blush is not suitable for oily skin types, as it could otherwise appear blotchy.

Blush pen

Blush sticks are creamy blushes in stick form similar to lipsticks. The color is applied directly to the cheeks. Work from the inside to the outside and from the front to the temples.

Liquid blush

Liquid blush is applied with a brush and blended with the fingers as needed. As the texture is quickly absorbed into the skin and dries, application must be quick. Many blush products are waterproof and last especially long on the skin.

The hand tools are make-up brushes, with which the application and blending of blush (especially powder blush) is very easy. A beveled, short-tied brush picks up the paint and releases it in a well-dosed manner.

So that the blush brushes last a long time, clean once a month with a mild shampoo and rinse under running lukewarm water. Important: Lie on a towel and let it air dry.

How to apply blush for your face shape

• Square face shape: Square faces often look very distinctive. Powder blush on the side cheekbones and tapering to the front, makes an angular face look much softer. A touch of blush to the left and right of the forehead and the jaw area also softens angular face shapes.
• Oval face shape: Oval faces can be perfected by applying the blush to the upper cheekbones and shading it up to the temples.
• Round face shape: Round faces often appear flat and gain more contour when the blush is applied at ear level below the cheekbones and runs down to the corners of the mouth.
• Heart-Shaped Face Shape: Heart-shaped faces have broad foreheads and pointed chins. To make a heart-shaped face look more harmonious, apply the blush below the cheeks and let it run steeply into the cheeks.
