5 Vegetables That Are not as Healthy as Expected

Do you think you are doing your body a favor by eating vegetables? Not necessarily! The following vegetables are not as healthy as always assumed.

1. Broccoli

Okay, broccoli is probably not all that bad – after all, eating the green vegetable reduces the risk of certain types of cancer, as one study found out. However, this vegetable is not particularly suitable for people who suffer from flatulence or irritable bowel syndrome. This is because the body can only digest the fibre in the large intestine – and that is where gases are produced that cause flatulence.

2. Peas

As diet expert Alissa Rumsey explains in an interview with “The Daily Meal”, peas are not the best vegetable you should reach for. Because, “Starches like peas are high in calories and carbohydrates.” Non-starchy vegetables, such as asparagus, mushrooms or beets, are better, you can also eat larger quantities of them.

3. Corn

Corn can basically be described as healthy due to its ingredients and its high nutritional value. The situation becomes more difficult if the maize is genetically modified – the consequences for the body have not yet been sufficiently researched. However, studies have shown that genetically modified corn could promote allergies.4.

4. Aubergine

Nutrition expert Maggie Moon is certain that eggplants are not as healthy as previously thought. “Eggplants are low in calories and a good source of fiber,” Moon reports in the Daily Meal. The downside of the vegetable variety, however, is that it literally soaks up fat and spices. And that in turn turns the eggplant into a calorie trap.

5. Spinach

The leaves of spinach or kale are able to absorb up to 48 pesticides. In this case, it is therefore particularly important to only buy organic products that are not contaminated. Nevertheless, the vegetables are an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium and magnesium.
