Loose skin is a natural phenomenon in the aging process. However, there are possibilities for prevention and tips for treatment.
Loose skin: natural causes
The stability and firmness of our skin is significantly influenced by collagen and elastin. These fibres, together with hyaluronic acid (water-storing molecule), make for supple skin.
With the natural aging process, however, the following side effects occur:
- The production of hyaluronic acid and lipids decreases with age. These two factors contribute significantly to the urgently needed moisture of the skin and cushion it.
- The number of collagen and elastin fibres is also reduced. These ensure an attractive density of the skin structure.
- Changes in hormone levels during the menopause can also affect the tissue and blood circulation.
External causes
- Sun: The exposure of our skin to UV radiation not only endangers our health, it also makes us age faster. The UV rays can trigger a breakdown of the fibres, causing the skin to lose its elasticity and stability. The structure of collagen is thereby damaged by oxidative stress.
- Nutrition: A balanced diet is essential for our body to prevent diseases and to supply the skin with all important vitamins and minerals. If you suffer from an established vitamin deficiency, supplementing your diet with, for example, vitamin C can make an important contribution to skin care.
- Alcohol and tobacco: Tobacco promotes the spread of free radicals and can also worsen the blood circulation. Alcohol inhibits the absorption of nutrients in the skin and can also inhibit the supply of antioxidants.
- Sleep: During sleep our skin regenerates. The best tips on creams, nutrition and the like are of no use if you continually give your skin too little room to recover. Did you know that you can fall asleep more relaxed with a little lavender oil on your pillow? In general, a good sense of well-being and a not too stressful everyday life contribute to a positive skin condition.
Detecting loose skin
Symptoms of loose skin can be a loss of shine, appearance of wrinkles and loss of elasticity. The loss of volume partially affects the overall structure and shape of the entire face. It is also often referred to as sunken corners of the mouth and loss of facial contours.
Loose skin: Tips for skin care
- It often seems that anti-aging products are only becoming an issue for older women. However, special anti-aging care is already recommended from the mid-20s onwards. Because with the right facial care you can minimise the loss of skin tension, which slowly occurs in women around 40. But what exactly does careful skin care look like?
- If you use make-up, you should pay attention to caring ingredients. Anti-age make-up products, for example, are enriched with hyaluronic acid and provide the skin with moisture during application.
- Never miss the use of a caring face cream with anti-aging ingredients and ideally with integrated sun protection. Even in winter, you should always use a day cream with sun protection, as our skin reacts even to light sunlight. Hyaluronic acid is extremely effective as a skin care ingredient as it promotes cell regeneration and binds an incredible amount of water.
- With a high-quality face oil you can also promote the elasticity of the skin. The skin becomes drier with age and can be enriched with oils. This way you can minimize sagging skin and age wrinkles.
- With an eye serum, you provide the particularly vulnerable area under the eyes with a refreshment that counteracts a weakening of their elasticity. With long-term use, you can support the fatty tissue and thus strengthen the skin.
- Speaking of serum: The most highly concentrated of all beauty products can ideally be integrated into your skin care routine in the evening. Apply a firming serum directly before applying a gentle night cream, after carefully cleansing your face.
Loose skin: Beauty treatments
- Thermal waves: This is a high-frequency technique that heats the deep collagen layers of the skin. This stimulates the production of collagen.
- Ultrasound: During treatment with ultrasound, the skin is lifted and tightened so that the tissue regains more stability.
Surgical treatments
- Filler: Injections create a replenishment of volume, at least in the short term, and provide fast results. They are mainly used in the area of cheeks, lips and temples. Hyaluron injections also help against wrinkles.
- Implants: Implants provide long-term results and are inserted directly under the skin to increase volume. Nowadays fillers and lipotransfers are more popular because the regeneration time is significantly shorter.
- Lipotransfer: In lipotransfer, fat is taken from one region of the body and re-inserted elsewhere. This procedure is particularly popular for filling up the volume of the cheeks. This can lead to swelling on the skin. However, the procedure sometimes lasts for over a year.
Loose skin on neck, legs or arms
Even though sagging skin (loose skin) is most noticeable on the face, you should not make the mistake of neglecting other parts of the body from care. Women are unfortunately at a disadvantage in terms of tight tissue due to their genetic predisposition.
But with the right care (especially oils and hydrating agents) and strength training, you can fight the connective tissue. If you consistently train and build up your muscles, you leave the skin hardly any chance to slacken.
An often neglected skin area is the neck. Here, loose skin often shows up in ring-shaped lines. The skin on the neck contains only a few sebaceous glands and should be protected against UV rays with effective sun cream, especially in summer. There are also special creams for the neck which provide additional ingredients especially for women with sensitive skin.
