Still wearing makeup at 40 like you did at 20? No way. Because many techniques and products are simply no longer good enough for mature skin. That’s why we’d rather listen to these eight beauty tips from a make-up artist who specialises in make-up for women over 40.
One thing is clear – we are all getting older. There’s no stopping that, and we don’t have to. Clinging to your younger self? No, thanks! Most of the time it just makes us look old!
Instead, we should adjust our beauty routine to our age. Because what was good for our skin at 20 is simply no longer good enough for skin over 40. So with increasing age we adapt our care to the needs of our skin as it grows older. But a more mature skin also means that we can no longer apply make-up the way we did in the 20s. But it is not only our techniques that we have to adapt to our mature but still beautiful skin. We should also pay attention to the right formulations, colours and tools for a beautiful end result. After all, we want to continue to emphasize and bring out our advantages.
Elise Marquam Jahns is a make-up artist for women over 40 and in conversation with Byrdie’s colleagues the make-up artist gave exciting beauty tips for mature skin.
No apple cheeks please!
The make-up artist advises: Do not apply rouge to the apple cheeks. This can additionally emphasize the signs of the times. Instead, the rouge should be applied with slight upward movements above the apple cheeks – this way you counteract gravity and create a fresh look. Our skin colour can also change over time. Elise Marquam Jahns therefore recommends paying attention to whether you use warm or cool shades when blushing.
Don’t forget your eyebrows!
According to Elisa Marquam Jahns, the “good thing” about getting older is that we no longer have to pluck our eyebrows too often, but we would have to start by tracing missing hairs. Special focus should be put on the end of the eyebrows, because with increasing age the hair growth decreases strongly at this point. Therefore: when filling out the eyebrows, do not forget the end, otherwise the brows will be too short.
Pay more attention to your eyelids!
Many of us have to fight with wrinkled eyelids or drooping eyelids from a certain age. If you put a light nude or champagne tone on the movable eyelid and under the eyebrow, you can create the illusion of larger eyes. To lift the eye area slightly, the make-up artist also recommends applying a darker brown tone above your natural eyelid crease. In this way you will visually shift the eyelid crease upwards.
Do without matt nude lipsticks!
Nude lipsticks with a matte formulation should be quickly banished from your make-up bag. Unfortunately, they settle in the lip wrinkles much too quickly and dry them out even more. Creamy lipsticks with a little shine and plenty of moisture will make your lips shine. And don’t be afraid of color – a beautiful red tone suits every age!
Eyeliner frames the eye!
Those who have to struggle with wrinkled eyelids as they grow older know that an even eye shadow look is not so easy. In this case, the make-up artist advises not to apply the eye shadow with wiper movements, but to work the product into the eyelid in circular movements. Applying eyeliner is also more difficult at 40 than at 20, but that is no reason to stop. You just have to find a technique to deal with the new situation. Jahns recommends using a kayal pencil instead of liquid eyeliner. This can be slightly blurred with a Q-tip to create a softer look. It also allows you to hide a less perfectly drawn line – win-win.
Use a soft foundation brush!
Using the right make-up tools is as important as using the right foundations, lipsticks and co. To prevent foundation from settling into the wrinkles, Elise Marquam Jahns advises using a soft buffer brush. This brush works the product evenly into the skin and ensures a flawless finish.
Lipliners ensure defined lips!
Wrinkles also form around the mouth area over time. It is often blamed on these wrinkles that lipsticks “bleed”. The colour then creeps from your lips into the small wrinkles. Not a nice look! To prevent lipstick from running, simply use a lip liner and lightly powder your lips.
Invest in liquid formulations!
Make-up artist Elise Marquam Jahns knows: in old age our skin tends to dryness. That’s why powder products in particular lie unsightly on the skin and accentuate wrinkles more than ever. Her advice: Use liquid or creamy formulations. Liquid foundations provide your skin with extra moisture and a cream blush can be built up at will and gives a fresh glow on the cheeks.
