Pain in lower left abdomen can have many causes. We have summarized the most important ones.
Pain in lower left abdomen can be caused by various diseases and causes. In any case, you should have the complaints clarified by a doctor!
An immediate visit to a doctor or the emergency room should be made if you have the following symptoms:
- Severe pain
- Bloody stool
- Fever
- Yellow skin
- swollen stomach
- Unexplained weight loss
- Permanent nausea / vomiting
Possible causes
Gas in the Digestive Tract
The formation of gas is normal during digestion. However, gas-producing foods, smoking or food intolerances can also promote the formation of gas. If the condition persists and further symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, blood in the stool or heartburn occur, a doctor must be consulted!
Digestive disorders
Complaints due to digestive disorders usually manifest themselves in the upper abdomen, but can also be felt in the lower abdomen. Consult a doctor if the pain or symptoms such as bloating, nausea, heartburn or belching worsen.
Diverticula
These are small bags that are formed at weak points of the intestinal wall and bulge outwards. If several such bulges occur, this is called diverticulosis. Diverticulitis is caused by the tearing or inflammation of these pouches.
Possible symptoms can be:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Under certain circumstances, constipation or diarrhoea may also occur
Treatment can include a change in diet, antibiotics or surgery.
Inguinal Hernia
In the case of an inguinal hernia, abdominal viscera emerge through the tissue or muscle in the groin region. This can be caused by heavy lifting or severe coughing.
An inguinal hernia can manifest itself, among other things, by pain and increasing curvature. A doctor should be consulted in any case!
Kidney stones
If a kidney stone moves in the kidney or ureter, this can cause very severe pain. The pain occurs mainly in the side under the ribs or in the back.
Typical symptoms may include:
- Red coloured, cloudy or smelly urine
- Dysuria
- Fever
- Chills
- Nausea and vomiting
Here, too, you must be treated by a doctor!
Caution: Severe pain can also be caused by shingles, which usually manifests itself as an additional red skin rash!
Pain in lower left abdomen in women
In women, the pain in lower left abdomen may also have the following reasons:
- Pelvic inflammatory disease: Infection of the reproductive organs
- Ectopic pregnancy: A fertilised egg has become implanted inside the fallopian tube
- Menstrual cramps: Cramps caused by the period
- Ovarian torsion: twisting of the ovary
- Endometriosis: Chronic disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is formed outside the uterus
