How to Sew a Headband: 2 Variations without Pattern

A headband adds the finishing touch to an outfit. It becomes especially chic with a touch of vintage – how to sew such a headband, we show you here. Without any pattern at all!

Sewing headband: 2 variations without pattern

We have two great instructions for you to easily sew your own headbands: a turban headband and a headband with a loop in the middle.

You need:

• Sewing machine
• Jersey or knitted fabric
• Matching sewing thread
• Staples or needles
• Fabric scissors

Sewing a headband with Turban-Twist: an instruction

You need two pieces of Jersey to sew your headband. Now, of course, it depends on how wide you want your headband to be and how much your head circumference measures. Add two centimeters of seam allowance to your head circumference. For a wider headband with a head circumference of 55 cm we now calculate in the manual with the measurements 57 x 24 cm (incl. seam allowances).

1. Cut two rectangles with your measurements.
2. Fold one of the rectangles lengthwise right to right on top of the other, so the left side points upwards!
3. Fix the upper open side with staples or pins. Repeat the step for the other cut piece.
4. Now sew the pinned long side with an overlock stitch, a zigzag stitch or with the overlock machine. Same for the second part.
5. Turn both pieces over so that the right side is now on the outside.
6. Now lay the two tubes so that the seam is in the middle.
7. One of the two pieces lies horizontally with the seam in the middle and upwards in front of you.
8. Place the second part vertically over the middle of the first part so that it looks like a plus sign.
9. Now join the two ends of the tube at the bottom, so that they lie here seam on seam.
10. Place the bottom side of the tape on top of the two ends from step 9. The seam is on top.
11. Place the last end pointing upwards under the other three ends without turning it over. This is how you create the bandeau effect!
12. Then place all four open ends on top of each other, fix them so that they lie exactly on top of each other and topstitch them again with an overlock stitch.
13. Cut off protruding corners and ends.
14. Now turn the headband over so that the seam disappears inwards.

Sewing a headband with loop: Sewing instructions

A nice alternative to the turban headband, is one with a decorative loop, as in this example:

For this headband you only need one of the tubes with your measurements plus a small rectangle for the loop.

1. Prepare a hose with your measurements as described above in the instructions. Right side is outside.
2. Cut another small rectangle from your fabric, e.g. 10 x 12 cm. Depending on which size you like, you can make it wider or narrower.
3. Fold the rectangle lengthwise in the middle, left side outside and quilt on the long side.
4. Now turn the rectangle that the right side is on the outside.
5. Fold the rectangle in the middle. Now the two ends lie on top of each other, the seam is on the outside.
6. Close the ends tightly together, so that it becomes a small tube. Fold the tube over.
7. Now pull the tube over your headband.
8. Now turn the headband inside out, turn it inside out, the seams lie on top of each other.
9. Fix the opening all around with pins, then topstitch, but leave a small opening for turning.
10. Turn the headband over and sew it together with the magic seam.

Sew and vary headband

Both headbands can be varied in size and fit adults as well as children and babies. And of course, the bands can also be changed at will. Instead of a loop you can tie a bow around it, instead of a plain turban headband you can mix different colours or patterns and much more – whatever you like.
