This is What Spring Does to The Female Body

In spring there is finally more sunshine again – and that lifts our spirits. But this time of year does some other things in a woman’s body!

Finally the sun shines outside again! And that creates a real chaos of emotions for many people – spring fever included. In fact, spring turns quite a few things in a woman’s body upside down. We are totally motivated to tackle something new, one woman may want to lose a little weight, the other one approaches the search for a new partner with fresh courage. But why are we so positive?

Total hormonal chaos

There are two main reasons for our good mood and our motivation: Hormones and sunlight. When the sun shines more in spring, it reduces the production of the so-called sleep hormone melatonin, which is released more in winter. It makes us need more sleep and makes us tired all day long.

If the melatonin level drops in spring, the level of another hormone rises in return: We release more of the “male hormone” testosterone, which gives us a lot of power. It not only provides motivation and optimism, but also gives us self-confidence. As a result, we suddenly seem to be able to achieve our goals (e.g. losing weight) much more easily.

Spring makes you happy

But the sunlight also influences us in other ways: For one thing, it gets light earlier again, so we can get out of bed better. On the other hand, it boosts the production of the happiness hormones dopamine and serotonin and helps the body to produce the “sun vitamin” D – which also has a mood-lifting effect. Some experts therefore assume that mild depressive moods can even be cured if you spend more time in the sun in spring.

Sunlight as therapy

All these are pretty good reasons to look forward to spring. Practically speaking, we don’t even have to be on the road, which wouldn’t be good considering the current corona virus situation.
