8 Eyeshadow Tips That will Take You from Beginner to Professional

Crass eye make-up and perfectly blended colours? We better leave that to the pros or not?! We’ll give you eight eye shadow tips that will take you from beginner to pro.

1. Prep & Prime

Eye shadow primer is still strongly underestimated. A good base is essential if the eye make-up is to last for a long time. Alternatively, you could also use a covering concealer here.

If you have very oily eyelids, you should definitely apply powder to the eye shadow base. The best way to do this is even the baking technique – simply apply a good amount of loose powder to the eyelids and let it “work” for a few minutes. This way no eye shadow can slip into the creases.

2. First Things First

Eyeshadow can of course crumble when used – this has nothing to do with quality, but with the pressing of the pigments. But to make sure that the eye shadow doesn’t land directly on your make-up, you should always apply make-up to the eyes first. At least if you plan to work with colour or slightly stronger eye shadow tones. Alternatively, you can apply a thick layer of baking powder under the eye and sweep it away afterwards – but it’s definitely easier the other way round.

3. Technical Skills

Technology is simply everything when it comes to perfect eye make-up. Therefore: Try to perfect the fading out and also test new techniques. For example, you can mix several eye shadows on one brush to make the result super soft, or you can blend the eye shadow more outwards to lift the eye optically and open it. Plus point: It even looks a bit like an eyelid line.

4. The Lower Waterline

Many people forget the lower water line when applying eye make-up. Of course this is not wrong, but the look is more coherent if you work on the waterline with the same colours as on the eyelid. If you want, you can also use other colours to bring a pop of colour into the look.

5. Know the Shape of Your Eyes

For eye shadow to work properly, you should know the shape of your eyes. With so-called hooded eyes, you have more area between the crease of the eyelid and the brow than on the movable eyelid. Here eyeshadows get lost very quickly, because you simply cannot see them anymore. Blend the eyeshadow very far up and out, so that you can see more of the look. For round eyes you should also blend outwards to make them look a little narrower.

6. The Right Tools

An eye make-up is only as good as the tools we use. So if you try to do a crass make-up only with your fingers, you will probably fail. Logically, that’s not the way it’s meant to be. As a rule, eye shadow should be applied with brushes. Sure, for some textures you can also use your fingers, but in the eyelid crease you should work with different brushes.

A must have for everyone: a fluffy dazzle brush, a pencil brush, a bound shader brush and a smudger brush. With these you can work with them for the time being.

7. Make a Plan

If you are not yet so sure about eye shadow and the combination of colours, you should take a photo as a template or think about how the look should look like. That helps a lot and you have something to orientate yourself by.

8. Clean up

The look is ready? Not quite yet! To make the edges look nice and defined, you can clean the edges with some concealer at the end. This will make your look much more precise and professional. All you need is a fine, firm brush. By the way, this trick also works great for looks with eyeliner!
