Sleep has the most important place in meeting our physical and spiritual needs. Quality and average 7-8 hours of sleep will help us get up in our minds. At the same time, sleep also affects our weight.
Sleep can be broadly divided into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep. Most adults go from drowsy to NREM sleep.
Non-Rem Sleep
This is one of the non-REM sleep stages. Deep sleep is experienced in this stage. It accounts for 75% of sleep. The feeling of tiredness that occurs during the day and physical damage to the body are treated at this stage.
First Stage
This is the dormant phase. In the first stage, sleep is quite light and it seems possible to wake up immediately. At this stage, eye movement slows down and muscle activity decreases. It rarely happens during sleep. The brain emits theta waves.
Second Stage
It is one of the most detailed parts of sleep. Eye movement is slower than in the first stage. Theta waves continue to propagate in the brain. In this stage, the person trying to be awakened is not aware that he is asleep, and it happens that he says he is not asleep. It is a part that makes up 45-55% of sleep time. Mobility in the muscles is slightly reduced.
Third Stage
Sleep is getting deeper. Mobility in the muscles is greatly reduced. Instead of theta waves, it begins to emit delta waves. Slow eye movements may be seen. It accounts for 20-25% of the overall sleep time. Delta waves are the lightest and most common waves. This stage is also called slow wave sleep.
Stage Four
At this stage, delta waves emitted by the brain have been observed to increase even more. At this stage, it is very difficult to wake the sleeper from his sleep. In this stage, sleep is very deep. The person’s sleepwalking and speech are seen in this stage. If you try to wake the person in this phase, they will feel sleepy.
Fifth Stage (Rem Sleep)
REM sleep is the fifth stage of sleep, which is the stage of rapid eye movement sleep. It is also known as paradoxical sleep. If you wake up during REM sleep, you may remember the dream you had. In this phase, the amount of our breath, heart rate and eye coordination increase. It is possible that you can see the rapid eye movements of someone in REM sleep. When you look carefully at the eyelid, you can notice that the eye moves quickly. The dream occurs at this stage. It causes a temporary sleep paralysis by locking the brain movement functions during sleep. REM sleep accounts for 25% of sleep.
The situation, which is called nightmare among the people, takes place in this sleep phase. Because REM sleep occurs with temporary sleep paralysis. If you wake up for any reason during .REM sleep, you may have difficulty moving because your body is locked. You cannot fully wake up, there are difficulties even in moving. Some people think about it as to why the dream is happening. Some people were talking about the cause of the metaphysical dimension. Ultimately, REM sleep is necessary. The person trying to be awakened during this sleep stands out with his tense mood or aggressive nature.
