A facial massage is not only wonderfully relaxing, it also has a positive effect on our skin. With simple tricks for home you can cheat the skin aging process.
Anyone who has ever had their face massaged knows the effect that facial massage has on the mind – it is simply a blessing, especially when stressed. But it can do much more.
What does the facial massage do?
Tension in the face is not that easy to spot. Usually a sore jaw is a sign that the teeth were gritted, chewed or pressed at night in order to cope with the daily stress. What many do not know: The muscles in the face are essential for a radiant glow, because when tense, unwanted expression lines arise, especially in the forehead and mouth area. A study by the “User Science Institute” examined the connection between facial massages and the reduction of excitement, worries and fears. The result: the massage on the face has a mood-enhancing effect.
Who doesn’t know them, the frown line that always cheats its way onto our forehead in a thoughtful state and makes us appear unintentionally grim, or the small eye wrinkles from squinting our eyes? The face has many nerve endings and pressure points, depending on the type of facial massage, it can be used to achieve holistic relaxation or better blood circulation to the face. Gentle stroking movements relax and release blockages, while circular, tapping movements stimulate circulation and massage skin care products well into the skin.
Similar to facial yoga, the facial features benefit from the pampering of a facial massage, as they appear firmer and fresher afterwards, and the good thing is that if you want to save yourself a visit to a professional masseur, you can use simple tricks to perform the facial massage yourself at home.
Properly prepare the facial massage
Before the home spa experience can begin, it is recommended to properly prepare the face for the massage.
- The perfect time for a facial massage is in the evening. Redness on the face has enough time to subside and skin care products can soak in all night. It is also a moment of rest, which can have a positive effect on sleep.
- In order to start the treatment, it is essential that the face and hands are thoroughly cleaned.
- A steam bath beforehand can also open the pores on the face and make it easier to remove old flakes of skin.
- Applying a skin oil or a rich cream makes massaging easier and has a positive effect on existing wrinkles.
Application: This is how the facial massage works
1. Forehead massage
When massaging the face, one follows the course of the muscles as best as possible. Horizontal wrinkles can be evened out with it. At the beginning the forehead is stroked, for this one places the right hand on the left temple and pulls it across the forehead, the same is repeated with the left hand from the other side. Then bring both hands to your temples and start slow circular movements. Important for a facial massage: exert as little pressure as possible. In a semicircular movement, the hands are brought to the frown fold and guided along the eyebrows with circular movements. Finally, use your index and middle fingers to smooth out the frown lines in the direction of the hairline.
2. The eye massage
The muscles on the eye run in a ring shape. To release the muscle circle, place the index finger at the outer corner of the eye and move along the lash line toward the nose without applying pressure. When you reach the inner corner of the eye, pull the finger up and back so that you end up back at the starting point. Small circles on the cheekbone complete the eye area. With a little oil or cream, small eye wrinkles can be massaged away in no time.
3. Naso-labial area
The hands move from the eyes to the upper part of the nose and position themselves on the right and left side. Slowly and with light pressure the nose is stroked downwards. Repeat this movement a few times and then loosen the lips with a light tapping massage. Make an upside-down V with your index fingers and stroke both of them down your upper lip. Similar to the forehead massage, the lower corners of the mouth are stroked, to do this, pull the right hand through from the left corner of the mouth to the other side and repeat with the left hand on the other side.
4. Jaw massage
Tension in the jaw can be felt quite quickly and intensely. If you press your teeth together, the muscle strands are clearly visible. Let the mouth area loose again and follow the course of the muscles with circular movements. The pressure can be increased at will so that the jaw is completely relaxed after a while.
5. Neck and chest area
At the end, the neck and chest area are stroked with large movements, the care products gradually work their way into the skin layer.
The anti-aging effect of the facial massage
Scientifically, the anti-aging effect of facial massages cannot be proven. However, circular movements stimulate blood circulation and thus the metabolism of the skin, which is why skin care products can work better. The effect can be further enhanced with a dermaroller. A multitude of small needles inflict micro-injuries on the skin during application. Sounds painful at first, but it is highly effective for small wrinkles. The skin’s self-healing process is said to promote collagen production and visually rejuvenate the skin’s appearance.
