Some things are especially likely to be returned or exchanged at Christmas. That’s why it’s best not to buy them in the first place and rely on these clever alternatives.
At Christmas, we are quick to reach for gifts we haven’t really thought about. Will the person receiving the gift even like it? Can he use it? Does it suit him? Many gifts are returned or exchanged after Christmas because of this. According to B-Stock, a company that specializes in selling leftover inventory from large retailers, this is particularly true of these products:
1. Fancy toys
Do you want to buy a present for your niece, your best friend’s daughter or your own child and reach for the talking doll, which you can change the diaper on and which also makes a little burp? If your niece did not want exactly this doll – and by that we really mean exactly this doll – you better keep your hands off it. Unusual toys such as talking dolls are often returned after Christmas.
Instead, choose more timeless toys – such as Lego blocks or a great board game that the whole family can play.
2. Certain fashion products
The bag of the brand xy or the dress that you yourself find so beautiful? Better not give something like that as a gift! If you love fashion, you have your own taste and prefer to choose your own pieces.
Even if it is more impersonal: In this case, you should rather give a gift certificate.
3. Tool
According to statistics, what fathers most often exchange after Christmas is tools. So you should leave screwdrivers and the like on the store shelf for Christmas – unless your father is an absolute handyman freak. For all other fathers, the following applies: They too are on holiday at Christmas and do not want to have to screw and hammer.
For example, it is better to buy your father a good Bluetooth loudspeaker or other technical device that he actually uses and that he enjoys.
4. Books in the wrong genre
Books are a bit like fashion: you rarely meet other people’s tastes. Therefore, instead of buying a specific book, buy an e-reader (e.g. Kindle) for the presentee or – if the presentee already has one – a voucher for the e-reader store.
5. Unnecessary kitchen appliances
Crêpe maker, bubble waffle iron or digital travel stove: the rumor that mothers want things for the kitchen still persists. But not every mother is a cooking fan. Fancy things that are used no more than once a year are most often exchanged by mothers after Christmas.
Instead, give your mom the gift of time with you – an afternoon at the spa, for example, or an invitation to dinner and a movie. She’ll get more out of that than being able to make rice in her high-powered digital stove once a year after Christmas.
