Ten classic haircuts for women reissued: We’ll show you the best hairstyles and styling tips.
1. Exact & Retro
Hairstyles with geometric contours and exact lines belong to the evergreens of classic haircuts.
The heads become rounder, fuller and remind of Mary Quant and the mods of the sixties. Not many people have tried out the unique look yet. But TV presenter Susan Atwell has.

- The cut: Geometric, finely stepped short hair cut. Tip: Have the straight contours trimmed every four weeks.
- Ideal face shape: The hairstyle gives more volume to delicate and oval faces (then leave the bangs a little shorter).
- Optimal hair quality: The main thing is straight hair, from normal to fine.
- Styling: Knead in mousse (e.g. “Blue Lotus Approach Volume Spray Foam” by Guhl), blow-dry hair with a round brush to make it smooth, then tap the tips slightly inwards with the brush. Finally, finish with shine spray (e.g. “Style & Shine High Gloss Spray” by Douglas).
2. Straight & Slightly diagonal
NEW: The bob is now asymmetrical, one side is cut shorter. An ideal compromise between short and half-long. Trendsetter of the new bob: singer Victoria Beckham.
- The cut: Bob cut asymmetrically over the neck (from ear to chin). Tip: A cut that also works without a lot of attachment volume!
- Ideal face shape: Any face shape, for long faces shorten the longer side part at chin height.
- Optimum hair quality: Suitable for all hair except curly or naturally wavy hair.
- Styling: Apply a light styling cream to damp hair (e.g. “Invisible Styling Cream” by Davines/Frauur), blow-dry with a square flat paddle brush, pull the tips slightly inwards and then pluck the hair with a little cream into the face.
3. Natural & stepped
NEW: Casually styled with side pony and completely natural, matching the ethno-look in fashion. They wear their hair the same way: actress and director Sophie Marceau and her film colleague Cameron Diaz.
- The cut: fringed step cut with pony cut to the side. Tip: Full pony alternative! The side-cut pony opens the face.
- Ideal face shape: Any. Wide faces are optically slightly stretched.
- Optimal hair quality: Almost any, except very fine hair (long steps make it too feathery).
- Styling: Pour some styling foam into the slightly damp hair (e.g. Pantene Pro-V Style’s “Mousse for individual step looks”), blow-dry over the fingers, twist individual strands in different directions and work them out with some foam.
4. Enticing & mysterious
NEW: the middle parting for the Madonna appeal. Singer and actress Vanessa Paradis chose the look, as did “Sex and the City” star Sarah Jessica Parker and music legend Madonna.
- The cut: Generously stepped curl cut – with centre parting. Tip: Due to the long steps (from chin length) it does not get too curly.
- Ideal face shape: Any. If the waves fall on the face, even round faces are possible.
- Optimal hair quality: Curly and strongly naturally wavy hair.
- Styling: After washing, knead in a mousse that defines the curls (e.g. “Curls & Waves Mousse” from Wellaflex) and leave to air dry (alternatively, use a hairdryer over the diffuser attachment). Wrap individual strands of the top hair around your finger and emphasize them again.
5. Stylish & girlish
NEW: The neck area is significantly longer. This makes the cut look softer overall.
- The cut: Short round cut with longer neck. Tip: For good contours, have the hair trimmed every four to six weeks.
- Ideal face shape: Brings beautiful eyes to the centre of almost any face shape (except round).
- Optimal hair quality: Fine and normal hair, as long as it is straight.
- Styling: Spread straightening balm in damp hair (e.g. “Smoothing Balm” from GHD), then blow-dry the hair with a round brush to make it smooth and bend the tips slightly inwards. Finally, fix the hair with hair spray (e.g. “Diamond Gloss” from Nivea Hair Care).
6. Short & feathery
NEW: Feathery cut steps. This looks somehow fragile and can be combined with almost every current fashion style.
- The cut: fringed step cut. Tip: Go to the hairdresser again after two months, because long, feathery strands quickly look fishy.
- Ideal face shape: Harmonious with narrow and striking faces.
- Optimum hair quality: Fine, straight to slightly wavy hair.
- Styling: Knead volume cream into damp hair (e.g. “Thickening Lotion 06” from Redken) and blow dry from back to front without a brush. Pluck the ends straight, use a little modelling cream (e.g. “Studio Line Remix” by L’Oréal Paris) to emphasise the structure of the hair, brush a few highlights behind the ear.
7. Casual & Seductive
NEW: In combination with long waves it becomes really casual.
- The cut: Generous step cut with full pony up to above the brows. Tip: Shorten the forehead fringes every two weeks.
- Ideal face shape: Any face except very wide faces.
- Optimal hair quality: Any, even fine hair and light natural waves.
- Styling: Knead curl styling into towel-dried hair (e.g. “Styling-Milk defined curls” by Fructis Style). First blow-dry the fringe with the round brush and dry the rest of the hair with a diffusor attachment. Use shine serum (e.g. “Silk Groom Serum” by Kiehl’s) to twirl out strands.
8. Minimalistic & uncomplicated
NEW: The boy style, especially uncomplicated hairdressing.
- The cut: Classic short hair cut (Pixie). Tip: Can be styled with the fingers. Still needs some styling for the structure, at least in the morning.
- Ideal face shape: Oval faces, but with very round faces the head can appear too small.
- Optimal hair quality: Any hair, from straight to wavy, the many levels thin out very strong hair a little.
- Styling: Spread light wax (e.g. “Creme Wax” by Dove) in your hands, brush from the back of your head over dry hair and twirl out a few strands on your forehead.
9. Long & Smooth
NEW: Smoothness and gloss are a must.
- The cut: Straight cut, only the hair on the sides is slightly stepped. Tip: Use hair treatments to make the hair look well-groomed.
- Ideal face shape: Any, only very narrow faces are not suitable.
- Optimal hair quality: normal and thick hair, straight to slightly natural wavy – the fullness makes it especially noble.
- Styling: Comb straightening balm (e.g. “Straight Away” by Frédéric Fekkai) into damp hair, blow-dry with a paddle brush, turn tips inwards around the face. Finish: Shine spray (e.g. “Leave-in Gloss Spray” by Goldwell).
10. Classic & Dandylike
NEW: In the neck the hair is short, but the outer hair falls extra long now – everything is cut from the back of the head, so there are many styling possibilities for the hair.
- The cut: Garçon cut with long neck and top hair. Tip: Bad Hair Day? Comb the top coat with a lot of pomade over the forehead to the back.
- Ideal face shape: Each, the longer top coat takes the severity. Optimal hair quality: Any, only curls don’t work.
- Styling: Spread styling cream in the hair (e.g. “Got2b Schmusekatze Anti-Frizz Lotion” by Schwarzkopf), blow-dry over the fingers to shape (pull hair straight). Dark hair shines additionally with a touch of shine serum (e.g. “Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade” by Aveda).
